creativity round up for the week from Not Afraid of Color

amid pieced blocks I added in an applique stem see?

This week has been full of art making and learning in many forms. I spent time in studio one working on the "growth" piece, as well as making a row (36" X 5" tall) of stems for the crocus piece. While sewing these I just look at contrast, use scraps which sometimes leads to 1/8th inch finished stems, color and line.

I start with an idea, stems, and then let my artistic soul make the work.

I watched several videos this week of interviews with Liz Gilbert and Ann ...

sewing/creativity round up "Indoor Gardening" from Not Afraid of Color

I spent the week sewing, writing, painting and drawing... with some creative cooking going on too. (we'll not talk of chores also done)  I cook out of necessity but it does not bring me joy... although now and then I notice something artistic while cooking like this swirl

boiling buttermilk, cocoa and butter to make icing

I wrote a short essay with the prompt "stay curious" yesterday and would love you to read it and add your two cents  (HERE IT IS)

While thinking about the curiosity factor in art making, and how I love each medium I use ...

sewing Saturday new to me techniques from Not Afraid of Color

Today's focus will be on fiber arts since I spent the better part of this week taking a workshop on  the Zen of stitch. There were 4 - 5 videos of lessons a day, only available 24 hours so it was not zen, it was a race to see and try it all.

I began to try all the stitching on all my samples if possible, to at least experience as much as possible.

Above is my last project for the week, embroidery quilting. I turned my little object into a needle book

with a place to tuck some new ...

for this week's sewing round up, I have 3 finished art quilts to share...

Spring flower 14" X 26"

(I shared the early stages of these projects on this post:    HERE!!

I believe all three qualify for the Table scraps challenge to use a word and our scraps to make something.

made from scraps, some painted, some appliqued, some pieced then appliqued!

since I just add elements until I feel done, the whole thing needs careful straightening before quilting edges.  I knew I wanted some straight lines to frame this..

creativity round up for the week Mixed Media! from Not Afraid of Color

Welcome to this week's creativity round up! I've spent creative time drawing, painting, learning via youtube videos, and sewing.  The color pink stood out this week in all areas.

Rainbow Scrap challenge  this month is using pink.  I wanted to not only play with scraps but do the table scraps challenge for next week, I started with getting out my stamps and ink to include the word peace... full pic and details of that next week but it is finished, and hanging in the family room

More sewing with scraps caused me to build this piece little bit ...

creativity round up Happy Easter/Spring! from Not Afraid of Color

Happy Easter/spring y'all!

For sewing this week, I have two things to share, Bunny and a sketchbook cover both  finished!

Last week I showed my twinkle blocks, but I might not have shared that I made tiny 3" pinwheel blocks from the cut off's making the twinkle blocks... they were hanging around on the design wall, when I put my finished hand embroidery up there...and it was a good match!

I was smitten with the whimsical line drawing by J. Steves and wanted to use my pretty embroidery threads... it didn't take long to finish ...

For this week, I have several projects to share, some in progress, one finished and one painting.

I have many creative interests, assuring I will always have something fun to work on! I am deeply into painting this week but took some time out to make some Twinkle blocks for rainbow scrap challenge.

I made the smaller size of the twinkle star but wanted a larger one. The tutorial is  HERE

The focus color of scraps for April is pink... yea!

sewing saturday new blocks and hand embroidery from Not Afraid of Color

welcome to this week's quiet sewing round-up! After finishing three big challenges last week, and doing two posts on the finished quilts, I enjoyed tidying up the studio, and making a few blocks.

this block is from the AQS (maker Gyleen Fitzgerald) newsletter as a free block. It's not easy to piece together, and there us a bit of distortion. I'm making mine in Rainbow scrap challenge colors of the month, this month is pink which I love

and I decided to use my 1930's scraps if I can... I love these whimsical little prints and ...

sewing saturday going round in circles from Not Afraid of Color

For this week's sewing round up...

"Will it go round in circles" 10.5" X 13"

the Project Quilting prompt was repetition, which I use as a design principle in all my quilts,I looked up repetition in artwork and found this page  https://magazine.artland.com/the-art-of-repetition-top-10-pattern-artists/ which has lots of photos. I had a couple ideas but returned to a love of circles.

The song inspiring my quilt,  is an oldie but goodie

I got out the fusible box of scraps

and cut lots of circles, some of which became circles and some became rings when cut ...

Table Scraps love for February... where or when from Not Afraid of Color

Welcome to my sewing round up for the week!

This is my "Table Scraps Challenge" piece for February. Thank you to Joy for issuing the challenge to keep us sewing from the treasure that a scrap box provides! She suggested "improv" and that's how I usually work...

Using my box of turquoise scraps and squares left from making this really improv piece...

sewing saturday... lots of projects from Not Afraid of Color

Welcome to this week's sewing round up... the first picture is from working with red scraps this week...

I've been occupied with three challenges, a meditation/writing workshop, and Stitch Camp this week! I am sorry to tell you I am not able to show a lot of photos since the only thing I finished was the Project Quilting piece.... make a silhouette (post HERE!!)

I can admit I felt like I was running from pillar to post though, from one activity to another, and filling the days with creativity!

Stitch Camp was offered by TextileArtist and involved ...

sewing saturday round up from Not Afraid of Color

for this week's sewing round up... I took a little rest from PQ13 and Sahrr and worked on my table scraps challenge for the end of the month.

I love red, and it's the color of RSC scrap challenge this month. I've been doing this for years and it gives me a focus to use my scraps which are a little gold mine of color and pattern, each month. However....

I am in possession of a RSC block cemetery. Blocks done each year yet not finished. I find them fun to make but putting them together takes ...

Sewing Saturday.... Project Quilting using " ALL the colors" from Not Afraid of Color

This week I worked on my project quilting challenge piece. (I didn't finish until after dark so the photos are not great)  It's like Project Runway, with quilting, we are challenged with a prompt, and it has to be from idea to finish,  done in one week!

What does that do to a creative process?  I admit to making challenge pieces even for National challenges, within a week once I got the idea. Sometimes it's good to have a deadline so that one might stop dithering and just get 'er done...

but it's pressure for sure ...

sewing saturday from Not Afraid of Color

For the sewing round up this week, I have plans...

For the stay at home round robin challenge this year, I am going to make a flamingo center and use my flamingo stash to make the block rows. I gathered some scraps here and like the combo.

Last year's  SAHRR quilt is over the cutting table in pic above

I started quilting my octagon quilt in sections last night.

I will quilt the center as a whole, 9 blocks sewn into 36.5" square.

after deciding how to best do it in sections, I built backings in the section ...

sewing Saturday, Table Scraps and Christmas Day from Not Afraid of Color

Welcome to this week's sewing round up! I've actually been sewing a lot amid all the cooking laundry and other daily work. Above is my Table Scraps offering for December.

I'm listening to this audio book while sewing this week

If you remember I've been working on a big Christmas quilt of octagons, whose blocks are done and some even sewn together

I've written other posts showcasing the prints, and forgive the pic as the sky darkened causing me to have to use a flash in the studio. I will need to quilt in sections ...

sewing saturday ....Holiday wine plus more from Not Afraid of Color

welcome to this week's sewing round up, and I've been obsessed with my latest Christmas quilt which is filling the design wall

free pattern source Missouriquilts

I still have two little octagons to surround

and have had such fun making the blocks. I take care to keep them even as I trim, but warning Jenny aat Missouri quilts does not, she just whacks away! If you're like me, and if something is meant to meet up then I work at making sure it meets up, then take time with each row to keep it straight. The octagons ...

sewing saturday hexis and octagons... what fun! from Not Afraid of Color

for this week's sewing round up... I offer up my hexi blocks for the RSC project and the octagon Christmas project that I am obsessed with. Both use scraps...

as I always say, little scraps  create beautiful quilts and life's little moments create a beautiful life.

 I love black labs... dogs...

kitsch from the 50's and 60's

color and pattern

and have learned a lot while making octagon quilt blocks, and am now more than halfway through making them.

sewing saturday Back to color!!! from Not Afraid of Color

For this week's sewing round up I'll start with the blocks I made using this tutorial Here

I made some more with bright solids, from my stash of solids I seldom use. I kind of like them but don't like how regular they are. I hope I will enjoy quilting them with variegated threads. I might add some applique too.
I also made some last sweaters for RSC in dark neutrals.
I watched this tutorial and decided the middle quilt looked like lots of fun, with big octagons.

Welcome to this week's sewing round up... I flitted around the studio making butterflies out of scraps this week. Scraps 3.5" X 5" and lots of press on crystals and beads, that is! I learned how to make these fabric origami cuties from this video...

sewing Saturday from Not Afraid of Color

 welcome to sewing Saturdays....

friends: "whatcha doing Lee Anna??"

LeeAnna: "nothing much, sitting around drinking some wine"

The scrappy color of the month at RSC is neutrals. I have neutral like scraps so it's time for wine bottles of the month...

The free pattern is on Hoffman Fabrics site and I've obviously made them in all the chosen colors this year.

I call the top one Lions Share Winery, chablis

Wine so good it will make you roar!

and the other one, Alegro Winery's sparkling muscato!

Sing the praises of Alegro Wines!
